Cultural PCA

Cultural PCA.

We are aware of principal components analysis (PCA) in population genetics (in my opinion a tool that is both grossly over-rated, and, not surprisingly, misunderstood and misused by the sweaty fetishists of Der Movement).

One can use PCA to analyze structure in variation in other metrics than genetics. What about culture – what Yockey would call High Culture or what Huntington would term Civilization?

Genetically, the first split in Europe is North/South with East/West being secondary; thus, in population genetics PCA the first axis is North/South and the second is East/West. I propose that as regards High Culture, as regards civilization, it is opposite, the first split, the first axis, is East/West and the second is North/South. Genetically, a Limey is more similar to a Russki or Hunkie than to an Afropwop or Dago; but culturally, the opposite would be the case.

For example, Yockey considered the part of Europe (Eastern Europe) that was the Warsaw Pact to be foreign to the West; to him only Western Europe (and its overseas diaspora) was the High Culture of the West   Huntington was a bit more liberal in his consideration of the West, but essentially we can contrast a Catholic/Protestant Celto-Germanic and Latin Western Europe, with a distinct civilizational history starting with the (Western) Roman Empire and the interactions between Romans (and the other peoples of Italy), Germans, Celts, Iberians, etc. and also profoundly influenced by the Renaissance and the Reformation vs. Counter-Reformation with an Orthodox/Catholic Eastern Europe, more lightly affected, or not affected at all, by those civilizational currents, and being heavily Slavic rather than Celto-Germanic and Latin, etc.  Thus, the top principal component axes of a High Culture PCA (or Cultural PCA or Civilizational PCA) for Europe are oriented different than the genetic.ones.

Of course, just like genetic PCA, there are distances and clusters even within points on an axis; thus there are East/West differences within the North/South ends of the genetic PCA and of course North/South differences within the East/West ends of the cultural PCA (and vice versa in each case).  But that’s part and parcel of breaking down variation into principal components, the important word is principal.  Thus, the differences within each axis are the principal component in the other axis. This is of course obvious and I wouldn’t even bother mentioning it except to answer in advance the shrill protests of sweaty fetishists who’ll accuse me of stating the Limey and Afrowop cultures are equivalent.  No, they are not, but they are more similar than either is to that of say, Russkis.

Of course, from a continental, global level, these intra-European difference, both genetic and cultural, are small compared to the broader, racial differences.

One could combine various metrics and create an overall PCA plot of Identity, incorporating the various ultimate and proximate interests that constitute that Identity.  What would merge, on a global level, is a clear distinction of all Europeans from others.  Intra-European differences would of course exist, but the much greater inter-racial vs. intra-racial gulf would be clear.

Organizing Our Environment

Blueprints of matter and mind.

Excerpt from a useful Counter-Currents comment:

…I realized that there is a likely connection between the way we think/act and the way our environment is organized.

There is something to this of course, particularly for the masses, but likely affecting even the “elite” to as well.  “The way our environment is organized” can include many things.  Obviously, at its most basic level, demographics and culture.  The “behavioral sink” is real.  I’ve noticed that White behavior declines as the non-White – particularly Black and Hispanic – portion of the surrounding population increases.  Now, part of that is simply White flight and selection: many higher-quality Whites flee diversity, leaving behind others more likely to ape (pun intended?) non-White behavior.  But I suspect that is not the full story; to the extent that higher quality Whites live among diversity, their own behavior may be coarsened and degraded by the experience.  No doubt all of the poisonous and vulgar cultural artifacts brought to us by a globalized, multicultural, and vulgar Judaized society affects (negatively) White behavior.

I suspect though that the commentator in his/her comment is concerned more with the physical structuring of our environment: for example, the architecture, the degree of urbanization (or lack thereof), and the entire milieu a person find themselves in.  No doubt one’s way of thinking would be affected living in urban vs. suburban vs. rural environments, and not only because of differing demographics and culture. Architecture would have a large effect: different styles are not only the product of a way of thinking but may feed back and affect the way of thinking itself. One wonders if Traditionalist vs. Futurist architecture and city planning would influence one’s preferences for those opposing worldviews: snug in your hobbit hole vs. reaching for the stars.  My article on avant-garde fascism touches upon some of these matters in more depth.

Understanding of these matters can clarify our realization of how current organizing of our environment affects us and our race, how to resist negative and promote positive influences, and how we may want to physically structure the environment in the ethnostate (or Imperium, eh?) to mold population-wide ideals and preferences in the desired directions.  Aesthetics are important, architecture, planning of living spaces, all of it.  The blueprint of our physical environment can be the blueprint of the ideals we strive for.

Of Declines and Falls

Not always an alien influx followed by racial admixture.

One of Der Movement’s favorite memes is the idea that national decline and the fall of civilizations always have an external racial basis – i.e., the decline and fall occurs as a result of some sort of alien influx followed by “racial admixture.”

A look at history provides many counter-examples.  Consider the Italian Renaissance, centered on North-Central Italy, particularly Tuscany-Florence. The great intellectual ferment there changes the world and then essentially vanished, all without the influx/admixture model being relevant.  What happened to the great Italian artists like Michelangelo and the all-around figures like Alberti and da Vinci?  Where are the great German composers today?  After Nietzsche and Heidegger, what happened to German philosophy?  What happened to French culture and French martial glory? Where’s the English Dickens and Shakespeare today?  Isn’t it true that the Third World influx into Great Britain occurred after, not before, they lost their empire?  Spain lost their empire, but that empire was formed after they had thrown off centuries of Arabic rule; it wasn’t that the “Arab influx” was responsible for Spain’s fall.  Does anyone really believe Portugal lost their empire because of “an influx of Negro blood?”  Was it really possible for a small nation like Portugal could maintain their lead in exploration and colonization after larger European nations got involved?  Did “racial admixture” lose the Netherlands most of their overseas possessions?  Did the transformation of Scandinavians from Vikings to SJW social democrats involve “racial admixture” or did the alien invasion of that part of Europe occur after the behavioral and cultural changes?

In these cases, to the extent the problem was biological, it was internal – dysgenics including the counter-selective effects of war, Frost’s genetic pacification, and the breeding of the unfit and the botched – as well as cultural/historical (Spengler?).  In many cases, alien influx and admixture, when it has occurred, was the consequence, not the cause, of decline. One can speculate that the Ancient World was similar.  In some cases of course, admixture may have caused decline (Ancient Egypt?  The Middle East?) but that’s as much the exception as it is the rule.

But Der Movement can’t get is head around such ideas, just as their heavy breathing about Paleolithic/Neolithic differences in Europe typically doesn’t understand that such differences were in place long before the beginnings of the Ancient World’s Classical Civilizations.

I would invoke “cognitive dissonance” here, but that implies some sort of cognitive process to begin with.

A note:

It’s a bit humorous that the same Alt Right that has disdain for S. Italians also has an obsessive man-crush on Julius Evola who is described thus:

Giulio Cesare Andrea Evola was born in Rome to a minor aristocratic family of Sicilian origins.

Again, I could say “cognitive dissonance” but that implies some degree of cognitive function, and I’m not sure how much of that Der Movement actually has.

Race and Culture News, 2/8/17

Several items.

Here is an excellent podcast about David Lynch, whose body of work I also appreciate.

Here are two videos that well represent the Lynchian approach:

The defeated Democrat Presidential candidate unburdens herself, also discussed here. I have previously observed that the Left is unable to learn from the Trump election, and here we see it on display.  It hasn’t occurred to these folks – or more likely they do not care – that their anti-White-man identity politics was a major driver of Trump’s surprise victory.  Keep on bashing the White men and those men – and many White women married to White men – will become more and more bloc voters for the populist Right. The Left will not learn because they cannot learn, and do not wish to do so. Breezy Steve Sailer is correct: the Left is held together by their hatred of White men and so they cannot and will not accept the idea that they need to alter their approach and worldview to become more palatable to White men. So the much-needed division and balkanization will continue.

And another piece of evidence for the Left’s cluelessness: the idea of a “women’s strike.” Err…”ladies” – men do not want to be around hysterical SJW fatties and varied assorted blue-haired freaks and dumpy menopausal hags.  So, a “strike” is something that’s going to backfire, big time.

Speaking of Breezy Steve, one of his few good ideas is using the RICO laws against organized leftist thuggery.  Now’s the time, is it not?  With “God Emperor Trump” as President, and Sessions on track to become Attorney General, why can’t that be done? Why can’t the leftist thugs be declared a terrorist organization, as one online petition calls for? How about actually cutting Berkeley funds? Can Trump do something else than tweet in his bathrobe?

Race, Ethnicity, Culture, and Epigenetics

Interesting findings.

If we ignore the PC-oriented nonsense about “social constructs” as well as the confusion about ethnic identification and ancestry, there are some interesting points in this article.

Excerpts, emphasis added:

These researchers report that they have identified signatures of ethnicity in the genome that appear to reflect an ethnic group’s shared culture and environment, rather than their common genetic ancestry.

“We found that both self-identified ethnicity and genetically determined ancestry were each significantly associated with methylation levels at 916 and 194 CpGs, respectively, and that shared genomic ancestry accounted for a median of 75.7% of the variance in methylation associated with ethnicity,” wrote the article’s authors. “There was a significant enrichment…of ethnicity-associated sites amongst loci previously associated environmental exposures, particularly maternal smoking during pregnancy.”

Roughly one-quarter of the epigenetic difference between the two ethnic subgroups could not be accounted for by differences in the children’s genetic ancestry. This difference, the authors suggested, could reflect a biological stamp made by the different experiences, practices, and environmental exposures distinct to the two ethnic subgroups.

It demonstrates in a whole new way that race combines both genetics and environment.

Studies by the Burchard group and others have found that using genetic ancestry rather than ethnic self-identification significantly improves diagnostic accuracy for certain diseases.

But the new data showing that a large fraction of epigenetic signatures of ethnicity reflect something other than ancestry suggests that abandoning the idea of race and ethnicity altogether could sacrifice a lot of valuable information about the drivers of differences in health and disease between different communities.

The nonsense about distinguishing more accurate “genetic ancestry” from less accurate “ethnic self-identification” fails the smell test since the Risch lab a while back showed near-perfect correspondence between identify and ancestry.  True enough, there is a social component to these things, since humans give simple labels to complex categories.  Thus, both Colin Powell and a pure-bred Nigerian would both identify as “Black” although there is quite a difference in their ancestry.  But that does not mean that ethnicity/race and genetic ancestry are different things; it instead means that human beliefs about ethnicity/race may not always be the same as genetic ancestry.

In any case, the main point here is that about 75% of the epigenetic differences between “ethnic sub-groups” are associated with genetic ancestry and cultural/experience differences associated with ethnicity accounted for the other 25%.

Therefore, there is a two-way interaction between the biological and the social/cultural. Biological differences inform the foundation of ethnic/racial identity (influenced socially by human beliefs about these groups), and cultural differences stemming from these identities can feed back and affect the biology.

“Back in the day” Ursus Major, affiliated with the EASU, talked about a “Race-Culture.”  He was more right then he knew.

Importance of Culture for EGI

Culture influences EGI.

At my other blog I had written about the importance of gene-culture interactions and how the concept can be used prescriptively, not only descriptively, through the convergence of European genetics (without panmixia!) through a sealing off of Europeans from non-Europeans, and low level gene flow over time among the former and none between the former and the latter – a concept of genetic concentration based on Identity (current genotypes and phenotypes, culture, history, etc.). Thus, culture is directly related to EGI, and directly influences it over historic time.
I again cite this paper that I briefly mentioned before that describes the process as occurring in the past. Note how NEC genetics has been radically changed by an important cultural-historical shift (Islamization). Note also that the more EC-like genetics in the Levant (of important when considering pre-Islamic Levantine gene flow into Europe) were Middle Easternified. In general, actual genetic data tend to go against the fantasies of “the movement.” Emphasis added:

The Levant is a region in the Near East with an impressive record of continuous human existence and major cultural developments since the Paleolithic period. Genetic and archeological studies present solid evidence placing the Middle East and the Arabian Peninsula as the first stepping-stone outside Africa. There is, however, little understanding of demographic changes in the Middle East, particularly the Levant, after the first Out-of-Africa expansion and how the Levantine peoples relate genetically to each other and to their neighbors. In this study we analyze more than 500,000 genome-wide SNPs in 1,341 new samples from the Levant and compare them to samples from 48 populations worldwide. Our results show recent genetic stratifications in the Levant are driven by the religious affiliations of the populations within the region. Cultural changes within the last two millennia appear to have facilitated/maintained admixture between culturally similar populations from the Levant, Arabian Peninsula, and Africa. The same cultural changes seem to have resulted in genetic isolation of other groups by limiting admixture with culturally different neighboring populations. Consequently, Levant populations today fall into two main groups: one sharing more genetic characteristics with modern-day Europeans and Central Asians, and the other with closer genetic affinities to other Middle Easterners and Africans. Finally, we identify a putative Levantine ancestral component that diverged from other Middle Easterners ∼23,700–15,500 years ago during the last glacial period, and diverged from Europeans ∼15,900–9,100 years ago between the last glacial warming and the start of the Neolithic.

Author Summary

Population stratification caused by nonrandom mating between groups of the same species is often due to geographical distances leading to physical separation followed by genetic drift of allele frequencies in each group. In humans, population structures are also often driven by geographical barriers or distances; however, humans might also be structured by abstract factors such as culture, a consequence of their reasoning and self-awareness. Religion in particular, is one of the unusual conceptual factors that can drive human population structures. This study explores the Levant, a region flanked by the Middle East and Europe, where individual and population relationships are still strongly influenced by religion. We show that religious affiliation had a strong impact on the genomes of the Levantines. In particular, conversion of the region’s populations to Islam appears to have introduced major rearrangements in populations’ relations through admixture with culturally similar but geographically remote populations, leading to genetic similarities between remarkably distant populations like Jordanians, Moroccans, and Yemenis. Conversely, other populations, like Christians and Druze, became genetically isolated in the new cultural environment. We reconstructed the genetic structure of the Levantines and found that a pre-Islamic expansion Levant was more genetically similar to Europeans than to Middle Easterners.

These results suggest that population migration to Europe from the Near East could have started after the LGM warming and continued until the Neolithic. In addition, these results show that the modern European genetic component is more recent than would be expected from a component that developed from the initial peopling of Europe in the Upper Paleolithic ∼40,000 y.a.

Race in the News, 7/20/16

Liberal hypocrisy, “movement” stupidity, and something for Derbyshire.

The liberals are getting all breathless about Melania Trump’s alleged plagiarism.  Very well. When when will they denounce Martin King for the same?

The gothic is a quintessentially European aesthetic. Moreover, it pertains and appeals more specifically to those of North-West European descent and is to be found in various modes and tropes throughout North-West European culture and contrasts with the Classicism of Southern Europe.

It’s true that Gothic culture was most strongly focused in NW Europe, and in the popular mind is associated with Northern France and Germany.  But there is this and also this and also this.

But that’s not the major problem with the above quote.  The problem is in its use of the present tense: “pertains” and “appeals.”  Yes sir, dem Krauts of today are all going into medieval Gothic themes (that is, when they are not welcoming axe-wielding refugees and supporting Merkel more than ever), while dem Wops are all flocking to the works of Aristotle (when they are not ship captains jumping off sinking vessels they ran into rocks or behaving like hedonistic jackasses).  And, certainly, your typical German-American loves dem dere Batman movies and those movies’ Gothic themes, while your typical Italian-American eschews Batman and prefers Clash of the Titans (release the kraken!).  What utter stupidity.

In 55 Days, one of the Marines, Captain Andy Marshall (Jerome Thor), has a mixed-race daughter, Teresa (Lynne Sue Moon) who he has left at a French Catholic orphanage. Teresa becomes a complication for Captain Marshall and Major Lewis as the story plays out. Even though she is rescued by Major Lewis in a dashing way with epic music playing in the background in the final scene we know she is not going to really be at home in Illinois after being raised in a Chinese orphanage. In my personal life, I know a great many people whose father was a career military man and whose mother is from the Far East, usually Korea. It seems to me that about half the kids of those combinations fail to launch, there is drug abuse, poor personal and career decisions, and other issues. Recently, several spree killers, such as Elliot Rodger, came from such a background.[2]

Moviegoers also learn that Baroness Natalie Ivanoff (Ava Gardner) has had an affair with a Chinese General, causing her husband to commit suicide. She is now alone in the world with a valuable necklace her only wealth. She is haughty to her in-laws angry at her infidelities, but one can see her haughtiness is empty bravado. The Baroness is in dire financial straits and irredeemable social trouble. By the end of the movie she has pawned her necklace. The Baroness’ problems are solved by her death in the siege.

In The Sand Pebbles, the problem of personal, intimate involvement with Third World People is fleshed out more deeply. The deep personal involvement has three different layers. The first is institutional. On the USS San Pablo, the Captain, Lieutenant Collins (Richard Crenna) organized a group of Chinese as coolie labor on the riverboat. The Chinese coolies turn part of the ship into their living quarters and a no-go area for whites. The coolies cook the meals, launder the clothes, clean and paint the ship, and service the engine. The Americans do little but drill in their perfectly laundered clothes, argue over trifles, and drink. This institutional organization brings about serious problems as the plot of The Sand Pebbles thickens.

It is in the bars where the problems start to crop up and the second layer of problems arises: intimate sexual involvement. When being shown around the ship, Frenchie (Richard Attenborough), tells Jake Holman (Steve McQueen) that the Pharmacist Mate is the critical person to know, as many of the men are getting venereal diseases from visiting the Chinese prostitutes. Normally, sailors visiting Far Eastern prostitutes is not a big deal. In fact, such a thing is often a rite of passage for many young men in the military. However, Frenchie takes the situation further when he becomes involved with a Chinese woman named Maily (Marayat Andriane) who works at the bar the sailors like to patronize. The woman is at the bar because she is burdened with debts that she manipulates Frenchie into paying.

Far Eastern morality is also clearly shown. As soon as Frenchie has the money to pay Maily’s debts, her Chinese creditor seeks more money by auctioning off Maily’s virginity. Additionally, the Chinese Republicans simply lie about who killed who, declaring Holman a murderer although the Republicans themselves were responsible for most of the killing.
